Senior year has a way of sneaking up on you.

One day you're dropping your child off for the first day of high school, and the next you're talking about graduation, college, and senior pictures.

If you've never planned a senior photo session before, it's normal to have questions. Here's what I tell every family before we get started.

Start Planning Earlier Than You Think

One of the biggest surprises for parents is how quickly photographers fill their calendars.

If you're hoping for a summer or fall session, it's a good idea to book a few months ahead. That gives you plenty of choices for dates and leaves room to reschedule if Iowa weather decides not to cooperate.

The earlier you book, the less stressful the whole process feels.

You Don't Need the "Perfect" Outfits

This is probably the most frequently asked question.

The truth is, the best outfit is one that feels like your senior.

You don't need to buy a whole new wardrobe. Pick clothes that fit well, are comfortable, and make them feel confident. A casual-but-nice outfit plus one or two that are a little more dressed up provides plenty of variety.

And if your senior plays sports, is involved in music, loves their truck, or has another hobby that's a big part of who they are, let's include it. Those little details help tell their story.

Feeling a little nervous? That's normal.

Honestly? Many clients show up a little nervous, explaining how awkward they are in front of the camera.

That's completely okay.

I'm not expecting anyone to know how to pose. I'll guide them through the whole session, keep things relaxed, and have fun along the way.

Usually about ten minutes in, everyone realizes this isn't nearly as uncomfortable or awkward as they thought it would be.

We'll Find a Location That Fits Them

One senior might love the look of downtown Des Moines.

Another might want tall grass, trees, or an open field outside Ankeny.

There isn't one "best" location. The best location is the one that feels like your senior.

We'll talk through the options and choose a place that matches the vibe you and your senior are going for.

What Happens if It Rains?

We live in Iowa.

Enough said.

If the weather isn't going to give us great photos, we'll simply pick another day. I'd much rather wait than have you spend your session worrying about the forecast.

My Best Advice? Don't Stress.

You don't have to know what to wear.

You don't have to know how to pose.

You don't have to worry if your senior isn't excited about pictures yet.

My job is to make the experience easy from start to finish. By the end of the session, most seniors tell me they actually had fun, which might be the biggest surprise of the day.

More Than Just Pictures

Senior pictures aren't just another thing to cross off your to-do list.

They're a way to remember this season of life exactly as it is right now.

The smile that's uniquely theirs. The confidence they're growing into. The little things you'll miss a few years from now.

If you're looking for a senior photographer in Ankeny or the Des Moines area, I'd love to help you capture this season in a way that feels relaxed and genuine, all while having a good time! Contact me today to start the conversation!
